Fans have voted for their most hated TV character, and there are a lot of questions on social media

A ranking of the most hated TV characters is inspiring reactions on social media that range from wildly funny to brutally honest to brutally confused.

This weekend a top 10 list of the “most hated TV characters, according to over 20,000 votes went viral on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

The list comes from the website Ranker, which claims on Tuesday that more than 29,000 users voted for the 150 “most hated TV characters of all time.”

HuffPost reached out to Ranker for more information on how the poll works: whether there is a deadline attached to it, whether it is an open-ended vote, and other logistics. The top 10 list on Ranker’s site differs slightly from the list shared in the viral X post. Most of the same names appear on both top 10 lists, but the order is not completely identical.

However, the list that most social media users saw looks like this:

  1. Joffrey Baratheon from ‘Game of Thrones’
  2. Ramsay Bolton from ‘Game of Thrones’
  3. Skyler White from ‘Breaking Bad’
  4. Shou Tucker from “Fullmetal Alchemist”
  5. Cersei Lannister from ‘Game of Thrones’
  6. Livia Soprano from “The Sopranos”
  7. Todd Alquist from Breaking Bad
  8. The Governor from “The Walking Dead”
  9. Caillou from “Caillou”
  10. Rachel Berry from “Glee”

X users generally agreed on the best choice.

But there was some disagreement.

Other people were titillated or baffled by a children’s cartoon character appearing among sociopaths, narcissists and murderers.

And many were outraged that Skyler White was placed higher on the list than her fellow Breaking Bad character Todd Alquist, a literal Nazi who — spoilers for a show that ended in 2013 — kills children and enslaves people. (To be clear, we’re talking about the version of the list that circulated on X; on the Ranker site, Todd was #7 as of Tuesday evening, while Skyler was at #20.)

Some people who saw the post decided to go to Ranker to see the full list. This only raised more questions:

Stephen Colbert’s inclusion on this list (#94) is pretty weird, considering he’s a real person and not a character (although he did play a fictional character, a conservative freeloader named “Stephen Colbert,” in “The Colbert Report”. “)

But Ranker’s list is quite strange overall – mainly because the site is just pushing its voters in that direction “Vote the TV characters from every series that you just didn’t like for whatever reason.”

And it seems like a lot of people’s reasons for voting for a character were because they just found it unpleasant.

Dawson Leery from “Dawson’s Creek” scored the number 21 spot, possibly because he has a really ugly cry. Emily Waltham from ‘Friends’ came in at number 26, likely due to the crime of briefly dating Ross and keeping him away from his central love interest, Rachel.

The list also seems to be riddled with errors, as in the character Baby (#92) from the films “House of 1000 Corpses” and “The Devil’s Rejects.” In those films, Baby is a human character played by Sheri Moon Zombie, but Ranker’s listing illustrates the “Baby” entry with an image of Baby Sinclair, the dinosaur doll from the ’90s sitcom “Dinosaurs.”

Found a very funny mistake on Ranker’s list of ‘The Most Hated TV Characters of All Time’.

It should also be noted that since “1000 Corpses” and “Devil’s Rejects” are films, there is no point in Baby or any other character in these works appearing on a list of TV characters.

Anyway, very little about Ranker’s list makes sense, so we’ll just let Baby Sinclair sum up how we feel about the whole thing:
